Latino Caucus Disappointed Calaveras Supes Didn’t Remove Commissioner Who Made Racist Remarks

March 17, 2016

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, released the following statement today after the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors opted not to remove Planning Commissioner Kelly Wooster. Wooster was captured on video at a March 3 Planning Commission referring to “people from Mexico” as an invasive species during a discussion about how to eradicate and reduce the spread of invasive species.

“The 21-member California Latino Legislative Caucus is disappointed the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors failed to hold Mr. Wooster accountable for his inexcusable behavior. The Supervisors had an opportunity make a clear statement that racist behavior will not be tolerated by any representative of county government and to restore the integrity of Calaveras County. Instead, they chose to send the wrong message to the 12 percent of county residents who are Latino that they do not matter. Their decision to let Mr. Wooster continue to represent County government is a slap in the face and reflects poorly on the entire county.”
