California Latino Caucus Chair and Vice Chair Respond to Governor Brown’s Budget Proposal:

January 10, 2013

SACRAMENTO - California Latino Legislative Caucus Chair Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Vice Chair, Assemblymember V. Manuel Perez (D-Coachella) released the statements below following Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s release of his proposed state budget:

“In past budget years the most vulnerable communities have disproportionally been affected by the burden of our state’s debt and economic instability,” said Senator Ricardo Lara. “Working families have had a harder time gaining access to essential services for a quality life, our children have dealt with overcrowded classrooms, and our young adults have been forced to pay higher college tuitions or drop out. The Governor’s budget proposal which prioritizes education is a step in the right direction to addressing these issues. I look forward to working closely with my colleagues in the legislature to develop a sustainable plan that will ensure the success of our state’s future.”

“The Governor’s budget proposal builds on the fiscal stability we have achieved, and it’s a good starting point,” said state Assemblymember V. Manuel Pérez, Vice Chair.  “I am pleased that education and health care are prioritized, as both are so critical to helping Latinos achieve the American Dream.  I will be reading carefully through the proposal looking particularly at impacts on rural communities, local economic development, and struggling families. It’s vital that we continue on a path that supports economic recovery and helps more of our families gain a foothold in the middle class, helping to restore California’s historic promise as a state of opportunity for all.”
