California Latino Legislative Caucus Welcomes Mexico’s President to State Capitol

August 26, 2014

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Latino Legislative Caucus proudly welcomed Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto, to the California State Capitol today.

“Mexico and California are proud partners and today’s visit by President Enrique Peña Nieto reminds us of our shared political and economic interests,” said Latino Caucus Chair Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Huntington Park/Long Beach). “We appreciate the President’s willingness to speak on issues such as immigration reform, international trade, pollution, and drug control. California is leading where the federal government is failing to act on many of these issues thanks in large part to legislation authored by members of our Caucus. We look forward to continue working collaboratively with President Peña Nieto in areas that impact both sides of the border.”

“President Peña Nieto’s visit comes at a timely and important period for California when so many critical issues of importance to the Latino Caucus are being debated,” said Latino Caucus Vice Chair, Assembly member Luis Alejo (D-Salinas). “Caucus members have been active in raising awareness and taking action over the plight of unaccompanied immigrant children and some of us recently visited Central America and Mexico to exchange information and ideas related to issues of mutual concern.”

Members of the Latino Caucus met with President Peña Nieto and other Mexican officials on a trade mission in July led by Governor Jerry Brown.

In addition to recent visits to Mexico and Central America, Caucus members visited Naval Base Ventura County and the El Centro Immigration Facility, where many of the thousands of unaccompanied minors across the country were being housed and processed.

“As a Caucus, we are working tirelessly to push for comprehensive immigration reform and improved relations with Mexico,” said Senator Lara. “We are looking forward to partnering with President Peña Nieto on future legislation and reform.”
