Latino Caucus Applauds Selection of U.S. Rep. Xavier Becerra as New CA Attorney General

December 01, 2016

SACRAMENTO – The California Latino Legislative Caucus today issued the following statement on the appointment of U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra as the newest Attorney General for the State of California:

“The California Latino Legislative Caucus congratulates Congressman Xavier Becerra on his appointment by Governor Jerry Brown to serve as the next Attorney General for the State of California.” said Caucus Chair Assemblymember Luis Alejo. “This is another historic milestone for Latino leadership in California.  When confirmed, Rep. Becerra will be the first Latino Attorney General in California history. Rep. Becerra’s experience and leadership at the national level will be of great service to California as we gird ourselves for potential federal rollbacks of the progressive policies we have enacted for the people of this great state. With the racially divisive rhetoric we heard from the campaign of the President-Elect, we can think of no better champion in the Attorney General’s office than Rep. Becerra.”

“I applaud Governor Brown for his nomination of Congressman Becerra as State Attorney General,” stated Senator Ben Hueso, Vice Chair of the Caucus. “Rep. Becerra is an experienced and well-respected leader who will fight for and protect the rights of all Californians. His commitment to public service and dedication to the people will serve us all well.”

Upon confirmation, California will have two Latino statewide officeholders, (Becerra and Secretary of State Alex Padilla) as well as Latinos as the leader of the Senate (Senate President pro Tempore Kevin De León) and the Assembly (Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon).
