CA LATINO CAUCUS APPLAUDS U.S. DISTRICT COURT DECISION ON CONSTITUTIONALITY OF THE CALIFORNIA VALUES ACT (SB54)

July 05, 2018

SACRAMENTO –On behalf of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) issued the following statement on today’s decision by U.S. District Court John A. Mendez rejecting the Trump Administration’s request for an injunction against Senate Bill 54 (De León) – The California Values Act.

“The California Latino Caucus applauds Judge Mendez’ decision on SB 54,” Senator Hueso said. “The California Values Act was one of the Latino Caucus’ most important pieces of priority legislation last year and was crafted to protect the safety and well-being of all Californians. We believe that California is safer and stronger when we value the work and contributions of the immigrant communities in this great state, rather than using our resources to assist the federal government in their malicious campaign to deport hard-working immigrants and families. We are within our rights to refuse to help Trump with his divisive policies. As the judge wrote, ‘refusing to help is not the same as impeding.’”
