Biography

David Huerta is the president of SEIU California and SEIU-United Service Workers West (USWW). Since joining SEIU in 1996, David’s focus has been improving the lives of working families and being an advocate for California’s immigrant population. He led the Justice for Janitors team that organized over thousands of janitors to strike for better wages and benefits. The strike was a monumental turning point for labor in LA and across the nation, raising the awareness of the power of immigrant workers in the labor movement. Under David's leadership, USWW has continued to grow, including adding thousands of Security Officers on tech campuses across Silicon Valley. He worked alongside USWW workers to pass important legislation that protects working people from wage theft and works to address the rape and sexual violence that was rampant in the janitorial industry. Under his leadership, members of USWW started the Ya Basta Center, which counsels janitors who have been victims of sexual violence and conducts sexual violence prevention training for janitors and their supervisors. On June 6, 2025, David was unjustly arrested and detained by federal agents while exercising his First Amendment rights as an observer of massive ICE raids in Los Angeles. His arrest sparked an enormous outcry and protests around the nation, particularly in California.
