Sandra R. Hernández, MD
Sandra R. Hernández, MD is president and CEO of the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), which works to improve health care for all Californians. Prior to joining CHCF, she served as CEO of The San Francisco Foundation and as director of public health for the City and County of San Francisco. Dr. Hernández co-chaired the council that designed Healthy San Francisco, the first local government program in the U.S. to provide health care for all residents. She practiced medicine at San Francisco General Hospital's HIV/AIDS Clinic for more than three decades and served as an assistant clinical professor at the UCSF School of Medicine, which awarded her its highest honor, the UCSF Medal, in 2024. Appointed by Governor Newsom, she currently serves on California's Health Care Affordability Board and previously served on the Covered California board of directors, appointed by Governor Brown. She holds degrees from Yale University and Tufts School of Medicine.
