Biography

Tamara Romo Gisiger is a 20-year-old sophomore at Bowdoin College. She is Swiss Mexican and moved to the United States at age eight without speaking English. Her work began with a junior year research paper examining how the Great Depression affected Mexicans in the United States. Through this research, she uncovered the history of Mexican Repatriation, the largest forced migration in U.S. history, during which around one million Mexicans were illegally deported, 60% being U.S. citizens. She was struck by how little this history was known or taught. Motivated to bring more awareness to this history, she continued her work beyond the classroom. Her research came to the attention of Senator Josh Becker, and she is now involved in efforts to build a memorial in Los Angeles honoring those affected, following legislation that made the project possible.
