Latino Caucus Urges Calaveras Supervisors to Remove Planning Commissioner over Racist Remarks

March 14, 2016

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, has sent a letter to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors asking for the removal of Planning Commissioner Kelly Wooster. Wooster was captured on video at a March 3 Planning Commission referring to “people from Mexico” as an invasive species during a discussion about how to eradicate and reduce the spread of invasive species.

“Openly racist and incendiary remarks have no place in the public discourse and cannot be tolerated. Mr. Wooster’s remarks reflect poorly not only on the Planning Commission, but the entire County,” Alejo said in the letter. “You, as the Board of Supervisors, have the opportunity and obligation to restore the integrity of your County Government by asking Mr. Wooster to resign his seat on the Planning Commission immediately and remove him if he does not. This action will send the message to all residents of Calaveras County that they matter and enjoy equal status in the eyes of their local government, regardless of their ethnicity.”

The letter, on behalf of the 21 members of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, was sent to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors today.
