CA Latino Caucus Statement on Governor Newsom’s Redeployment of the California National Guard from the Border Area

February 11, 2019

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, the Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), issued the following statement on behalf of the Caucus on Governor Gavin Newsom’s general order moving California National Guard personnel from the border & redeploying them to focus on the actual threats California faces, not the White House’s manufactured crisis:

“The California Latino Legislative Caucus fully supports Governor Gavin Newsom’s general order to redeploy California’s National Guard from the U.S./Mexico border to areas of real need,” Gonzalez said. “From the outset, the California Latino Caucus, as a group, has believed this entire ‘Crisis at the Border’ to be a cynical, manufactured attempt by the Trump Administration to promote fear and drive a divisive wedge between Americans. While the use of the National Guard was conditioned by Governor Brown on improving public safety, and not enforcing immigration law, the potential still existed for the use of state resources to support a federal policy that has inflicted inhuman trauma on people seeking refuge in accordance with national and international laws. For this reason, we applaud Governor Newsom’s general order and his letter to the U.S. Secretary of Defense.”
