California Latino Caucus Chair: Lack of Latino Representation on California’s Federal Courts Must Be Addressed

December 19, 2021

LOS ANGELES - Today, Senator Maria Elena Durazo, Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the recent announcement by the Biden Administration of four federal judicial nominees for the US District Court for the Central District of California.

"Nearly half of the population within our state served by the US District Court for the Central District of California is Latino. Sadly, the recent announcement by the Biden Administration that none of the judicial nominees for these life-time appointments is Latino prolongs a severe underrepresentation that has plagued our judicial system for generations.

As our caucus has stated for years, representation at all levels of government and throughout our judiciary matters. Latino representation in our federal court system, particularly in the state with the largest Latino population, is long overdue and must be prioritized. To ignore this growing constituency comprised of many qualified attorneys sets a horrible precedent and sends the wrong message to the next generation of Latinos eager to enter public service."
