Latino Caucus Releases Statement in Response to Dr. Diana Ramos’ Appointment as California Next Surgeon General

August 25, 2022

SACRAMENTO—State Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement on behalf of the California Latino Legislative Caucus on Governor Newsom’s appointment of Dr. Diana Ramos as California’s next Surgeon General. Currently, Dr. Diana Ramos, serves at the California Department of Public Health’s Center for Healthy Communities where she leads the public health and prevention programs.

“I applaud Governor Newsom’s decision to appoint Dr. Diana Ramos, the first Latina, to lead the CA office of Surgeon General. As an adjunct clinical professor at the Keck USC School of Medicine, first Latina and public health physician to hold the position of President of the Orange County Medical Association, and medical officer for the CA Department of Public Health, Dr. Ramos is exceptionally qualified to lead the CA office of Surgeon General,” said Latino Caucus Chairwoman, State Senator María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles).

“Despite making up 20 percent of California’s population, Latina women continue to be underrepresented in nearly every sector. Nationwide, Latina women account for just 2.4% of all physicians in the United States. As the next Surgeon General, Dr. Ramos will continue to advance the health and well-being of all Californians and drive science-based solutions to our most pressing health challenges. Dr. Ramos is the public servant we need leading our response and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
