SacBee: Giants reliever Sergio Romo honored at California Capitol

The San Francisco Giants entered Monday with a losing record, but relief pitcher Sergio Romo won plaudits from California lawmakers for his service.

Fingers glittering with the three World Series championship rings his team has made a habit of winning, Romo arrived in Sacramento to accept a Latino Spirit Award. The California Latino Legislative Caucus bestows the honor on Latinos prominent in fields that can include business, public service, and sports.

Given that the Bay Area and Los Angeles are California’s largest population centers and therefore account for a substantial number of Assembly members, lawmakers who are Giants fans or Los Angeles Dodgers loyalists will often trade playful jabs on the Assembly floor or on social media. Someone yelled “Go Giants!” as Romo was introduced on Monday.

But Giants faithful lording Romo over their Dodgers counterparts should remember that Romo’s childhood loyalties lay in Chavez Ravine, not McCovey Cove. The Giants hero was raised a Dodgers fan.

“I grew up on that side of things,” Romo said. “It’s sheer irony that I grew up rooting for blue and here I am wearing a lot of orange.”
