California Latino Legislative Caucus urges Obama to consider Tino Cuéllar as nominee to fill Supreme Court vacancy

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, issued the following statement today regarding the vacancy on the United States Supreme Court and the potential candidacy of California Supreme Court Associate Justice Mariano Florentino Cuéllar:

“Tino Cuéllar, an Associate Justice on the California State Supreme Court, should receive serious consideration from the Obama Administration to replace Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court. Cuéllar is an extremely accomplished jurist with degrees from Harvard, Yale and Stanford and was given the highest rating by the California Bar Association. He would make an excellent choice to join Justice Sonia Sotomayor as the second Latino justice to serve on the nation’s High Court.

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear and rule on important cases this session, including the principal of ‘one person one vote,’ the viability of labor union agency fees, and on President Obama’s executive actions on DACA and DAPA. Whomever President Obama nominates, the Republicans in the U.S. Senate cannot be obstructionists and must grant the President’s highly qualified nominee a hearing as required by the Constitution.”
