Vida En El Valle: 2016 Latino Spirit Awards: Esteban Hernández

SACRAMENTO -- Mexican ballet dancer Esteban Hernández received the Achievement in Performing Arts award from the California Latino Legislative Caucus on May 2 during the 15th annual Latino Spirit Awards at the State Capitol in Sacramento.

“The career of a dancer, an artist in general, takes you to live in different places and it helps you to grow as an artist as well as a person,” Hernández said. “I’ve been lucky to travel and live and study in different cultures and that is reflected in my way of dancing.”

As is customary every year, the California Latino Legislative Caucus announced its list of priority bills to tackle this legislative session. The 22-member caucus released bills with a focus on education, immigration, the environment, among other issues.

Remaining mindful of the needs of the states largest group, lawmakers believe this year’s bills aim to spurt progress within the Latino community.

Vida En El Valle: Speaker Rendón represents a new generation

SACRAMENTO -- Denise Díaz woke up before sunrise to catch a flight from the Los Ángeles City airport to Sacramento. She had received a special invitation to attend Assemblyman Anthony Rendón, D-Paramount, swearing-in ceremony at the state capitol.

Born and raised in the City of Southgate in Southern California and a constituent of Rendón’s district, Díaz witnessed the assemblyman’s rise in the political hierarchy long before he came to Sacramento.

LA Times: California leaders tell Supreme Court that undocumented workers are making the state stronger

A cross section of California leaders in business, education, law enforcement and religion joined Tuesday in urging the Supreme Court to uphold President Obama's plan to offer temporary relief and work permits to as many as 5 million immigrants who have been living in the U.S. illegally.

They drew a sharp contrast with Texas, which has complained of the burden imposed by immigrants and led the legal fight to block Obama's executive action.
