SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, issued the following statement today following the death of Helen Chavez.
“Helen Chavez holds a special place in the history of the civil rights movement and fighting for justice for farmworkers. She was uncomfortable being in the spotlight like her husband, but she was no less dedicated. Ms. Chavez started working in the fields at a young in the 1940s and knew what conditions for farmworkers were like. She fought with her husband in the pursuit of justice and was arrested with him for protesting against harsh working conditions. All the while she was a mother to eight children. She lived a full life and will be missed.”
