SACRAMENTO – On behalf of members of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), Caucus Chair, and Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles), Vice Chair, issued the following statement on President Donald Trump’s inappropriate threat of using United State trade policy to punish Mexico over immigration:
“The Federal Administration is attempting to blackmail Mexico by weaponizing our trade policy. It is absolutely senseless and reckless. We need to work with Mexico and our global partners to address the root causes for this recent surge in immigration across our southern border. Using tariffs as an economic weapon to address these challenges is inappropriate. Trump needs to stop distracting and stop scapegoating immigrants. This is immoral. This is not the answer.”
