CA Latino Caucus Honors Latino Trailblazers with 23rd Annual Latino Spirit Awards

SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Latino Legislative Caucus today recognized Latino trailblazers at its 23rd Annual Latino Spirit Awards during an Assembly floor ceremony at the State Capitol in Sacramento, CA. 

 

“For more than two decades, the Latino Caucus has proudly celebrated the incredible contributions of Latinos across California through the Latino Spirit Awards,” said Caucus Chair, Senator Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach). “At times like these, it is more important than ever to lift up the stories of those who embody excellence, resilience, and the vibrant spirit of our communities. Our honorees inspire us all and reaffirm the powerful role Latinos play in shaping California’s future.”

 

Every year, the Latino Caucus honors Latinos/as in a variety of categories that range from business and entertainment, to public service and human rights.  Many of the honorees are pioneers in their respective fields and have overcome tremendous obstacles, rising to become role models and community leaders. They serve as a reminder of the talent we have within our diverse Latino community and are a source of inspiration to all Californians. Established in 2002, the Latino Spirit Awards take place each year at the State Capitol to coincide with Cinco de Mayo. This year’s honorees included: 

 

  • LUIS ARMONA (Principal Owner, Meruelo Enterprises) - Achievement in Business
  • HON. XAVIER BECERRA (Former HHS Secretary, Atty Gen., Congressman) - Achievement in Public Service
  • RAFFY BITCHAKDJIAN (President, Pasadena Fire Fighters Association) - Achievement in Public Service
  • MARCELA GUTIÉRREZ-GRAUDIŅŠ (Founder, Azul) - Achievement in Enviro. Justice
  • JESÚS MORALES (Social Media Philanthropist) - Achievement in Philanthropy
  • LUISA ORTEGA, Ed.D. (E.D., Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project) - Achievement in Community Empowerment
  • RENÉ M. RAMIREZ, M.D. (Surgeon, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons) - Achievement in Health and Science
  • MARGARITA ROCHA (E.D., Centro La Familia Advocacy Services) - Achievement in Public Service
  • ANGÉLICA SALAS (E.D., Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of L.A.) - Achievement in Human Rights
  • ANGÉLICA VALE (Celebrated Entertainer) - Achievement in Arts and Entertainment
  • LA PEÑA CULTURAL CENTER - Achievement in the Arts


“All of these honorees, every single one, brings something to the table that captures the essence of what it means to be Californian,” said Assemblymember Juan Carrillo (D-Palmdale), Vice Chair of the Caucus. “Through their work, creativity, and service, they help make our state stronger, more vibrant, and more united.”

Since its creation in 1973, the California Latino Legislative Caucus has grown in number and stature. There are now a record 38 members of the Caucus, including 35 legislators, 3 constitutional officeholders, and a historic majority of 22 Latina members. The Caucus boasts a rich history of empowerment, legislative and political success and serves as one of the most influential and strategic organizations in California focusing primarily on improving the quality of life for California’s Latino working families.
